What is an ophthalmologist?                                                                                                         (back to top)
Many of our patients have had previous “eye exams” with optometrists and wonder how our care differs from that of their previous eye care provider. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors and, as such, have attended medical school for four years after finishing college. After medical school, ophthalmologists must spend one additional year of general medical or surgical training in a teaching hospital prior to beginning their three-year ophthalmology residency. Ophthalmologists are unique among eye care providers in being well-versed in the general medical and surgical conditions that can affect your eyes. They are able to communicate effectively with your medical doctors and take a holistic view of your eye care rather than focusing simply on your eyes. In addition, only ophthalmologists have been trained as eye surgeons, and they therefore have years of experience in evaluating surgical patients, performing surgery, and managing surgical complications. Trust your eyes to an ophthalmologist.

What surgeries do you offer?                                                                                                        (back to top)
We offer modern no-stitch cataract surgery, eyelid plastic surgery, Botox, and laser treatment for glaucoma and certain retinal conditions. Our practice can also treat dry eyes with punctal plugs, a simple, reversible procedure performed in the office that can provide significantly improved ocular comfort.

I’m having eye problems. What eye conditions do you see?                                                (back to top)
The East Ridge Eye Center offers comprehensive evaluation and management for a full spectrum of ocular conditions. The most common conditions we see in the office are cataracts (opacification of the lens of the eye), glaucoma (optic nerve damage), macular degeneration (age-related damage to the retina, causing central vision loss), diabetic retinopathy (damage to retinal blood vessels caused by diabetes), dry eyes, watery eyes, and refractive errors (the need for glasses or contacts). Treatments are available for all of these conditions and we carefully look for any abnormalities. It is also very rewarding for the patient and doctor to find nothing more than the need for glasses or contacts to solve a blurry vision problem. This way, after a comprehensive exam in our office, our patients can rest assured that their eyes are otherwise fine.

Do you sell eyeglasses?                                                                                                                 (back to top)
Yes. We have a newly-renovated optical shop featuring a wide selection of frames in the latest styles. We will work with you to find a pair of glasses that meets your needs and your budget. Our optician, Frank Adkins, provides superlative service and only high-quality materials. You will see well and look good!

How can I make an appointment?                                                                                                (back to top)
Call 423-894-1453 and speak with one of our assistants to arrange an appointment according to the time that would be best for you.

How long will my visit take?                                                                                                           (back to top)
The length of your visit will vary according to what eye concern brings you to our office. While all new patients can expect to spend at least an hour and a half with us, some more involved eye conditions can take longer to address.

An hour and a half?                                                                                                                          (back to top)
Because our patients are generally dilated, some of your time will be spent waiting for your dilating drops to take effect. Also, because we do offer an on-site optical dispensary, some of your time may be spent choosing and being measured for glasses. Please take full advantage of this service to save time at the conclusion of your visit.

How do I get to your office?                                                                                                           (back to top)

Do you take my insurance?                                                                                                        (back to top)
We are providers for most insurance plans (Medicare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Health Care, Healthspring, Aetna, Cariten, to name a few). Please call 423-894-1453 if you are unsure about your specific plan.

How do I pay for my visit?                                                                                                              (back to top)
Payment is necessary at the time of service with all co-payments, deductibles, and co-insurance due at the time of service. We offer a variety of payment options including cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. We also offer financing through Care Credit.
